Emergency standby backup power system for upgrades to the Cox Creek WRF in Anne Arundel County, MD

The facility enhanced nutrient removal (ENR) upgrades to the Cox Creek Water Reclamation Facility (WRF) in Anne Arundel County, Maryland are part of a historic U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) initiative to restore clean water in the Chesapeake Bay, whose watershed includes six states: Delaware, Maryland, New York, Pennsylvania, Virginia, West Virginia, and the District of Columbia. The WRF’s new membranes and modified clarifiers remove millions of pounds of nitrogen, oxygen-demanding particles and phosphorus discharge that can threaten wildlife and their habitats.

The Cox Creek facility, which processes waste from about 38,500 homes and businesses in northern Anne Arundel County, is the county's oldest and serves the largest area.

Phases 2 and 3 of the project, which are currently underway, include construction of a new membrane bio-reactor facility and site electrical distribution system that will provide additional efficiencies and site improvements.

A majority of the $141 million project was paid through the state's "flush fee," officially the Chesapeake Bay Restoration Fund, which the State of Maryland created in 2004 to pay for improvements to wastewater treatment plants throughout the state.

Curtis Engine supplied and M Davis & Sons and PC Construction installed three new MTU Onsite Energy generators and related accessories as part of the Phase 2 ENR upgrades at the Cox Creek WRF in Curtis Bay, MD.
